Born 1960 in Manchester, England.

Moved to Northern Ireland in 1965.

First story published in 1982.

Nominated for the John W.Campbell Award for Best New Writer for his short fiction.

His novelette Unfinished Portrait of the King of Spain by Van Gogh was a finalist for the Nebula Award in 1989.

Winner of the 1992 Philip K.Dick Memorial Award for his third novel, King of Morning, Queen of Day .

His novel Hearts, Hands and Voices was short-listed for the Arthur C.Clarke Award.

Ian McDonald lives in Belfast with his wife Patricia and two cats.
