Living history

Unfinished by Design

A way to hold a life’s work open: people, instruments, places, attempts and questions still in motion.

A life of making leaves more than finished objects. It leaves conversations, abandoned approaches, instruments altered for a particular purpose and ideas that return years later in a different form.

A history with room to continue

Unfinished by Design is the place for gathering those strands of Charly’s work. Electronics, sound, archives and possible futures can be followed through the connections between them.

The account should retain the scale of a lived experience: who was there, what was being attempted, what changed and what the people involved remember differently.

Two kinds of evidence

A dated document and a later recollection illuminate different things. Both can matter, provided the reader can tell which is which. A photograph may establish a setting while a conversation restores a purpose the photograph cannot show.

As material is recovered, individual entries can connect to MARK/SPACE, Anachron City, the Festival of Future Possibilities and the music and making that surrounded them. Their dates and credits should come from the source material.

Leave an opening

The title makes room for additions and corrections. Someone else may remember a missing person, recognise a piece of equipment or recover the reason for a decision.

The archive becomes more useful when those contributions remain attached to their sources and when the people represented can help shape their own account.
