Using focused light to cut, engrave and mark materials.
A starting point
A laser concentrates light into a small working spot. In the workshop it can cut outlines, engrave surfaces or mark parts. What it can do depends on the laser type, power, optics and material; different machines are not interchangeable.
Vector paths guide cuts and line engraving, while raster images can guide area engraving. Focus, speed and power determine the result, and the width of the cut matters when parts must fit together. Begin with a small material test and record the settings. Use only materials approved for the machine, with its enclosure and extraction in operation; unknown plastics can produce hazardous fumes.
