Embryo

Von einem unerwarteten Konzert in München zu einem Leben voller Mitwirkung.

Persönliche Erinnerungen und Hörtipps aus Charlys Musiknotizbuch.

Die Tür geht auf

In 1969 I was 17 years old
and learned that Amon Düül
was going to play
in the old streetcar base
on Ungerer Straße.

Waiting.
Cold concrete.
Expectation humming louder than the city.

The Düül never showed up.

Instead—
some guys appeared, set up,
and started playing music
like nothing I had ever heard before.

No slogans.
No costumes.
No announcement.

Just sound—
breathing, stretching, refusing to behave.

That was the moment
Christian Burchard
and his band EMBRYO
entered my life.

Not as a concert.
As a door.

From that night on,
music was no longer something you listened to.
It was something you joined.
A process.
A journey.
A responsibility.

I didn’t know it then,
but a line had been crossed—quietly, irreversibly—
from audience
to participant.

A short Chronological Media Timeline of Embryo (1960s–Present)

1960s–1970s

  • Autumn 1969: Rare early photo of Embryo’s original lineup – A press clipping shows the band performing in Hof, Germany, featuring founding members Christian Burchard, Edgar Hofmann, Lothar Meid, and others[1]. (See archival photo: Embryo in Hof 1969).

  • Late 1971: Live TV footage (West Germany) – Video of Embryo playing the protest song “Espagna Sí, Franco No” on German television[RP]. This rare clip captures the band’s jazz-rock energy during the early Krautrock era. (YouTube Video)

  • October 9, 1978: Concert film from Turkey – Embryo performing “Political Prisoners” (also known as “Amnesty Total”) live in Ankara[3]. This footage, recorded during a late-1978 tour, showcases the band’s world-fusion lineup in a rare Middle East appearance. (YouTube Video)

  • 1979: Documentary “Vagabunden Karawane” – Werner Penzel’s film follows Embryo’s 9-month overland journey through Iran, Afghanistan, and India in 1979[4]. The documentary features road footage, jam sessions with local musicians, and behind-the-scenes glimpses of the band’s communal travels. (Watch full film on YouTube – Vagabunden Karawane, 1979)

1980s

  • August 8, 1989: East Berlin TV broadcast – Embryo live at the “Liedersommer” festival, Insel der Jugend, East Berlin (GDR)[5]. This concert – later remastered by an archivist – was televised on East German TV (DFF) and captures Embryo’s late-’80s lineup bridging jazz and world music shortly before the fall of the Berlin Wall[5]. (YouTube Video)

1990s

  • June 24, 1994: 25th Anniversary concert in Munich – Embryo’s 25 Jahre (25 Years) celebration at the Tollwood Summer Festival, Olympiapark[6]. The show (released on the 25 Jahre Embryo! VHS) features the band’s 1990s lineup with global guests like Indian vocalist R.A. Ramamani, marking a quarter-century of Embryo’s music collective[7][8]. (YouTube Video – excerpt from Tollwood ’94)

2000s

  • July 6, 2007: Live at On the Road Festival (Italy) – Embryo’s performance at the Pelago “On the Road” festival showcases their late-2000s ensemble merging psychedelic jazz with world rhythms. An official festival video was published, capturing the band onstage in Tuscany[9]. This concert highlights leader Christian Burchard alongside younger members and international guests. (YouTube Video)

2010s

  • 2018: Documentary “Embryo – A Journey of Music and Peace” – A film by former member Michael Wehmeyer chronicling Embryo’s nearly 50-year odyssey[10]. Released in 2018, it includes archival footage, interviews (with band veterans like Marja Burchard, Roman Bunka), and live clips, painting a comprehensive portrait of the group’s evolution from 1969 to the 2010s. (Vimeo Video)

2020s

  • May 15, 2020: “Live Behind the Green Door” streaming session – During the COVID-19 lockdown, Embryo (now led by Marja Burchard) broadcast a live session from Import Export in Munich[11]. The video features the band’s new generation performing an improvisational set – later released as a live album – and offers an intimate, behind-the-scenes look at Embryo’s creative process in 2020. (YouTube Video)

  • August 15, 2021: Open-air concert in Hildesheim, Germany – Embryo playing a socially-distanced outdoor show at Hildesheimer Marktplatz in summer 2021[12]. This video captures the post-2018 lineup (with Marja Burchard fronting the collective) infusing classic Embryo tunes with fresh energy. It exemplifies the band’s enduring presence on stage over five decades. (YouTube Video)

This List is a starting point and far from complete.

Each entry above includes a direct link to the photo or video described, showcasing Embryo’s rich history – from grainy 1960s photos and 1970s festival films to modern HD concert footage – and covering all eras and many lineups of this pioneering Munich music collective.[1][4]
