Jerry Garcia

musician, singer, guitarist, Grateful Dead, San Francisco, Haight-Ashbury, california, HALO, counterculture, psychedelics, 1960s

Full name: Jerome John Garcia.
Born 1 August 1942, United States.
Parents: Ruth and José Garcia.

One of the original 5 members of the Grateful Dead: Gerry Garcia, Pigpen (Ron McKernan), Phil Lesh, Bill Kreutzman, and Bob Weir.

"The Grateful Dead always cared about the community. The Haight-Ashbury Legal Organization (HALO) and the Free Clinic were both funded by the Grateful Dead. Free concerts and all-night parties, special gigs at small venues, wonderful music... the Dead epitomized the new spirit of mutual support and collaboration... an almost telepathic 'in-tune-ness'.
The early death of Pigpen caused a shudder in the Dead continuum, but the spirit managed to transcend and live on. The death of Jerry 'Captain Trips' Garcia, nearly three decades later, tears at the heart of a community all too aware of their own mortality. And yet, good deeds do live beyond themselves. No wonder they're the 'Grateful Dead'." --Henry W.Targowski.

Died on wednesday 9 August 1995. News of his death spread like wildfire over the Net, nearly overwhelming parts of the system.
